Speakers, Workshops, and Resource Connections
Renee Begay
Main speaker "I am From" workshop Preparing an “I Am From” poem helps us begin to think and to see ourselves in a relational way. Rather than identifying yourself by your occupation or location, this activity will help you write your story in regards to your roots and your experiences. This activity reveals where we are from, what culture we come from and also reveals how we relate to self, others, and God. You have permission to be as artistic as you want in this activity. The only rule is to make the beginning of every expression “I am from…” Renee Kylestewa Begay is from the Pueblo of Zuni in Southwest New Mexico. She is a mother to three daughters and married to high school sweetheart Donnie Begay. During her undergrad, she founded the Nations movement—a national ministry that seeks to build relationships with the Native American community. Renee currently works with IEmergence which is a catalyst for building pathways for Indigenous communities to engage in culturally appropriate holistic transformational development. |

J Goins
Eldering Well, a workshop for elders at WJEF J Goins and his wife Stephanie I live in Greenville, South Carolina. J has served in a variety of roles, mostly with Youth With A Mission (YWAM), in a list of countries, on several continents. He’s been active in indigenous communities for nearly 20 now concentrating mostly on health and balance. J has been a regular volunteer "resident elder" at WJEF. My ministry description, roles, and purpose has ranged from servant to leader, from student to teacher, and in many cases, resident Elder. This wide-range of cross-cultural ministry for close to 40 years has provided for me my greatest strength, experience. My people are located in a Native community in North Carolina and are not federally recognized. I have an extremely high regard for the values, standards, customs and practices that the First Nations traditionally used to established peace and harmony in their communities. I am a Native Elder that has made life devastating sacrifices, so that the generations coming after me can live healthy, spiritually, emotionally & physically significant and fulfilling lives. This suffering, and deprivation was almost entirely involuntary. And, for a large part of it, I was nescient of the racial and cultural implications. In some ways this trauma has diminished my capacity to enable others, and in some ways, it elevates it. |
